RACE RECAP: 2022 Race No. 146 – October 27, 2022 Virginia Is For Racing Lovers 200 – NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour – Martinsville Speedway

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Corey LaJoie picked up his career-first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race Thursday in the Virginia Is For Racing Lovers 200 at Martinsville Speedway. The race was only his fifth series start; he does have a 2010 victory in the now-defunct NASCAR Southern Modified Series.

LaJoie qualified fifth and wasted little time moving forward, he set the pace for most of the first half of the race. A poor pitstop early in the second half of the race set him well back in the field, but he was again moving forward to fourth when a lap 192 (of 200) caution bunched the field.

The leaders all bounced off each other as they entered turn three, with LaJoie getting through first and back into the lead. He survived one final restart to get the victory. Matt Hirschman finished second with Ryan Newman third.

Jonathan McKennedy, who was leading on that lap 192 restart recovered from the wreck to finish 12th, enough to secure his first Series Championship.
