RACE RECAP: 2022 Race No. 105: August 13, 2022 World Of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars – Knoxville Nationals – Knoxville Raceway

KNOXVILLE, Iowa – Donny Schatz put on a late race charge to win the 61st running of the NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals World of Outlaws race. It was his 11th win in Sprint Car racing’s biggest event.

Schatz started third and had a lackluster first half of the race, at one point dropping back to seventh. Up front it was all second-starting Tyler Courtney who set a blistering pace in the first 25 laps. A break at that point allowed teams some adjustments to set up for the 25-lap run to the finish.

David Gravel jumped to the lead on lap 27, and like Courtney earlier looked invisible. However, in the pack Schatz was making moves. He was in fifth, by lap 27, three laps later to fourth and to third a pair of laps after that. He took over second spot on the 37th lap, which was followed by the final caution of the race.

Off the restart with 11 laps remaining Gravel jumped to a lead, but a few laps later Schatz was closing quickly. On lap 46, Schatz got the run he needed on the back straightway to take the lead. A lead he held until the finish.

Gravel finished second with Logan Schuchart advancing from 17th to third.

For Schatz the win was worth $175,000.
